Care Flight's air medical communication specialists are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to calls from EMS, fire and law enforcement personnel and hospitals and other health care facilities. Our mechanics work all hours of the day to ensure our helicopters are safe and prepared to respond when called upon to care for a critically ill or injured patient.

What do I need to work at Care Flight?

Flight nurse requirements:

The purpose of this position is to work as a part of the Care Flight Team to provide high quality medical care and transport of critically ill and injured patients. Coordinate a smooth and efficient system of stocking supplies and equipment on the aircraft/ambulance and equipment rooms and exchange of REMSA and Care Flight user agency equipment.

Special Qualifications:

  • At time of hire:
    • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
    • Registered nursing license in Nevada.
    • Submission of California reciprocity paperwork.
    • Three (3) years critical care nursing experience.
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider certificate.
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), EMSC, or ENPC certificate.
    • CPR.
    • Valid Drivers license.
    • A clean driving record mandatory.
    • Submission of EMS RN after hire.
  • Within one year of employment:
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
    • Transport Nurse Advanced Trauma Course (TNATC) or Advance Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
    • CFRN/CCRN certification.
  • Additional skills required:
    • Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
    • Ability to make rapid decisions for appropriate care in an uncontrolled, unsupervised and sometimes threatening environment.
    • Self starter requiring little oversight.
    • Must be adaptable to change and able to function in a team based management structure.
  • Must be able to work at Reno, Nevada; Truckee, California; or Gardnerville, Nevada bases as requested.

Flight Paramedic requirements:

Coordinate a smooth and efficient system of stocking supplies and equipment on the aircraft/ambulance and equipment rooms and exchange of REMSA user agency equipment.

Special Qualifications:

  • At time of hire:
    • Current California or Nevada Paramedic certification, California certification preferred
    • Three (3) years current experience as a Paramedic.
    • National Registered Paramedic certification.
    • ACLS certification.
    • CPR certification.
    • ITLS/TNATC certification.
    • PALS/PEPP certification.
    • Nevada or California Driver’s license. 
    • Pre-hospital experience preferred. 
    • Experience in a high performance ALS system beneficial. 
    • Experience in EMS and public education; field or classroom based desired.
    • Experience operating an emergency vehicle a plus
    • Clean driving record mandatory.
  • Upon Hire:
    • Submission of Paramedic reciprocity in State of California after hire.
    • Air Ambulance Attendant’s License after hire.
  • Additional skills required:
    • Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
    • Self starter requiring little oversight. 
    • Must be adaptable to change and able to function in a team based management structure.
    • Knowledge of medical policies, procedures and the REMSA Standard of Care
    • Must be able to report to work at Reno base or at various satellite bases as requested.
  • Within one year of employment
    • Successful completion of a REMSA approved Critical Care Paramedic Course (CCEMTP).
    • Sierra Sacramento Valley (SSV) for California completed.
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).

Air Medical Communication Specialist requirements:

Special Qualifications:

  • Must meet all requirements of a Communication Specialist I before applying
  • Within 6 months:
    • Successfully complete NAACS (National Association of Air Medical Communication Specialists) Training Course.
    • Attend crew resource management training
  • Communication Specialist I requirements:
    • Upon Hiring
      • Current certification or successful completion of a Paramedic or EMT-II program.
      • Current certification as an EMD with the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch.
      • Current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR card.
      • Ability to type 30wpm.
      • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
      • Ability to multi-task
    • Within 6 months:
      • Knowledge of System Status Management (SSM), and the System Status Plan.
      • Ability to effectively take 911 calls.
      • Ability to maintain required Pro QA scores within the Academy standards for accreditation.
      • Ability to correctly dispatch Care Flight and follow flights.
      • Thorough knowledge of all REMSA dispatch, Care Flight, and Emergency Operations policies and procedures.
      • Proficiency with Dispatch protocols, programs, and system operational requirements.
      • Computer literacy in multiple systems and programs (i.e. CAD system, Prolog digital recording system.)
      • Basic leadership skills and the ability to make decisions based on the STAR CARE principles.
